The introduction tells the build-up of the car industry up to the end of the 90s. Then the following 17 chapters take the story from the early 2000s up to the current day. Largely chronological, each chapter builds the story through key cars that the author test drove showing how the Chinese auto industry was developing.

The book is illustrated throughout with around 150 photographs of various cars.
